A renovation has cabinetry in more rooms than people expect. The kitchen gets the attention, but then come the closets, the bathroom vanities, the mudroom, the laundry room and maybe a wall in the family room. Bought one room at a time, small differences add up: a white that is not quite the other white, door styles that are close but not the same, pulls that change from room to room. Our part of a renovation is the cabinetry. When one crew plans it across the house, the kitchen, closets and built-ins get thought through together and every room matches.
Timing makes or breaks this kind of job. Cabinets go in late, after the walls are closed and the messy work is finished. Fresh drywall mud, paint and floor finishes all put moisture into a house, and wood takes it on. Detroit makes that worse, with humid summers followed by dry heated winters, so cabinetry set in a damp house with no heat or air running can shift once the seasons turn. Wiring and plumbing also need to know where the cabinets will land before the walls close. That is why the layout should be settled early, even though the install comes late.
An old house makes planning count for more. The median Detroit home dates to 1946, according to the Census, and roughly nine in ten were built before 1980. Paint from before 1978 can contain lead, so if old trim and cabinets are coming out, ask about testing before anyone sands or cuts into them. Expect rooms that are not square once the walls are open. We work with builders as well as homeowners, so it helps to have your list of rooms, any plans, and your schedule in hand. Call (313) 858-6000 and walk us through it.
“It was the least stressful, most beautiful part of our whole house renovation.”
Yes. Cabinetry across the house is our part of a renovation, and we work with builders as well as homeowners. Tell us who else is on the job when you call.
Early. The layout affects where wiring and plumbing go, so it is much easier to settle before the walls are closed, even though the cabinets themselves go in near the end.
No. Matching does not have to mean identical. A kitchen in one finish and a closet in another can still feel like one house when details carry through. We can work that out during design.
Custom kitchen cabinetry, islands, closets, built-ins, and shelving for homes in Detroit and the towns around it. If you're not sure, just ask.
That's our favorite kind of project. We can do the kitchen, closets, and built-ins together so every room matches and you're working with one crew.
